Title: Crunchers Inc seti team thread

vaio - January 14, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
Welcome to Seti :)

Currently we have only 2 active members at this project, which is now solely run under the boinc platform.

1) Cousin Caterpillar
2) VAIOMAN

Team additions would be most welcome.........this team is our weakest area at the moment.........something to work on :P ;)

cswchan - January 15, 2006 02:50 AM (GMT)
My SETI points didn't seem to transfer over to the team... <_<

oh well... 1st one's 78% done...
B)

vaio - January 15, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
I assume the old stats were gained under the "classic" client?

Wondering, says we have have 3 members but only 2 with stats.......wondering if your stats may appear once you return some work under boinc?

Would be a nice lil boost if they did :)

cswchan - January 15, 2006 02:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah... stopped SETI in 2003 when I went into F@H

vaio - January 15, 2006 02:58 AM (GMT)
Your results must be somewhere.
We could start a new project

SCAMS..........."Search for Charles' Alienated Missing Stats"

cswchan - January 15, 2006 03:01 AM (GMT)
The stats are still active... I reactivated them yesterday when I downloaded BOING with SETI.. supposedly got out of the other team & joined Crunchers Inc. that's an awfully lot of WUs & hours to throw out... unless the points are NOT transferrable..
<_<

vaio - January 15, 2006 03:03 AM (GMT)
All I know is that I went to my statspage....quit nforcers team........then formed Crunchers Inc.

Hopefully your work will show up later :)

Cousin Caterpillar - January 15, 2006 10:26 AM (GMT)
Hi Charles and vaio!

I think SETI Classic and SETI BOINC points are seperated, the same way WCG points earned with the UD client are seperated from WCG BOINC points.

My WCG UD points don't show in my BOINCStats box and DC-Vault specifies "Seti(BOINC)" on their Projects page.

But I still hope they show up....would be a tremendous boost! B)

vaio - January 15, 2006 12:15 PM (GMT)
Hi Cuz :)

vaio - January 15, 2006 01:11 PM (GMT)
4 seti results pending...........back to Einstein a while

cswchan - January 15, 2006 02:31 PM (GMT)
Is the BOINC/SETI server down? I've got a WU trying to send & another trying to download since about 3 am. local time...
<_< ... one of the reasons I went to F@H in the first place.... <_<

vaio - January 15, 2006 02:37 PM (GMT)
Servers are, as ever, erratic..........I sent 4 earlier that are "pending" in my statspage.

Cousin Caterpillar - January 15, 2006 03:40 PM (GMT)
I hadn't noticed until I read your post but I have some Downloading/Pending Seti's also.

They know what they have to do if they want to use my computers! ;)

vaio - January 15, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
That's the good thing with boinc...........if project server naps there is always other work that can be done :)

Zachary - January 15, 2006 04:29 PM (GMT)
If you edit your prefernces in the boinc manager and change the "connect to server every----days" to 4 days the client will cache enough work to keep you busy even if the server is down awhile. I believe they have a weekly outage on wednesdays to clear out any backlog.

vaio - January 15, 2006 04:33 PM (GMT)
Weekly outage

Seti Wednesday........Eon Sunday..........UD everyday

Yup, you can cache up to 10 days work in boinc :)

cswchan - January 16, 2006 03:32 AM (GMT)
Looks like my SETI Classic point didn't migrate over...
<_<

vaio - January 16, 2006 03:37 AM (GMT)
Was avoiding mentioning it

Perhaps just a funny different scoring system.........sure I got something when I moved over.......but I didn't have much to start with

cswchan - January 16, 2006 03:40 AM (GMT)
Over 2 years of crunching down the tubes... as it were... had
SETI@home classic workunits 5,832
SETI@home classic CPU time 77,292 hours
BUMMER!!!! :(

vaio - January 16, 2006 03:43 AM (GMT)
:(

cswchan - January 20, 2006 01:24 AM (GMT)
News
No Work Notice
We are almost done with the science database merge. During this operation we are unable to create new work, so we eventually ran out of data to send to our participants. We hope finish up and start creating new work later this evening or by tomorrow morning.

vaio - January 20, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
Good shout Charles.........I saw that at distributed computing info recently.

Perhaps we should have a "project news" thread just to report future outages etc???

Cousin Caterpillar - January 21, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)
I'm getting SETI work again..... :)

Cousin Caterpillar - January 22, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
Welcome to Crunchers@SETI Beyond

I just read you were planning to join and you're already showing stats!

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_displa...p?teamid=121985

vaio - January 23, 2006 01:08 PM (GMT)
Ooh my seti units are gonna timeout tomorrow...........back to boinc

Beyond - January 23, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
nicked from the seti front page;

Outage Notice
We plan to have a 3-hour outage on Tuesday the 24th at 18:00 UTC in order to upgrade a disk enclosure. There will be no uploads/downloads during this time. The work may take only a half hour, but we're calling for a longer outage just to be sure.

John Galbraith - March 27, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
SETI@home needs your help. But before we tell you why - and how you can help - Dan and I would like to thank you for your role in the SETI@home success story.

We would first like to thank you for your participation in SETI@home. During the first SETI@home project you personally assisted us by searching for extraterrestrial signals in 1653 data chunks and providing 1.476 years of computing time. We want you to know we appreciate your efforts and the efforts of the other 5.4 million volunteers who have donated over 2.4 million years of processing time. When we started, people thought our projection of 100,000 users to be overly optimistic! You helped us prove that public participation in scientific computing could work. You also helped us to see that this type of community effort deserved to be more common. That's why we developed the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing or BOINC. BOINC has the benefit of allowing our volunteers the option of sharing their processing power with other worthy projects in addition to SETI@home. These projects range from looking for gravitational waves to searching for cures to diseases.

But all these successes are just a beginning. If you have not visited the SETI@home website recently, we have successfully transitioned to operating under BOINC. Because of this, new searches are on the horizon for SETI@home. We are releasing a new version of our processing software that increases the sensitivity of our search by a factor of two or more. We are building and installing a new data recorder at Arecibo. This data recorder operates in conjunction with a newly installed receiver that has the capability to observe seven places on the sky simultaneously. It also increases our sensitivity by another factor of five. These increases in sensitivity mean that SETI@home will have capability of detecting signals that are three times more distant than we could before. The region of space we can search will expand by a factor of thirty. That's thirty times the chance that your computer will detect that faint signal from another star.

This increase in capability isn't without cost. Following the "dot com" bust, the commercial support that kept SETI@home running has largely disappeared. Because of this loss of support, we can no longer count on matching funds from the University of California. We are rapidly approaching the end of what funds we do have. We we will need to raise about $750,000 to pay for these new capabilities and to keep SETI@home operating for the next year. Without this support SETI@home may be forced to shut down.

We hope that you will consider making a donation to SETI@home. You can make a secure donation by credit card by clicking this link. Instructions for donation by check or money order are there as well. Unless you specify otherwise, your donation will be noted by a star icon next to your username on the SETI@home pages and your username will appear on our list of donors. If you do not wish to have this recognition you may indicate that as well. Please be assured that regardless of whether or not you choose to have your donation be anonymous, SETI@home will not share your address with other organizations.

You can check on our fundraising progress by visiting our main site at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

Thank You,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got this a few days ago. I haven't crunched there in almost four years. It was fun once but there are more important things to use computer time and power on now and I'm sure not in any financial shape to send them a donation.
I'm thankful to the SETI project for what they've done for distributed computing as a whole. DC as it is today probably wouldn't be near as advanced as it is without the groundwork they laid. I just have a problem with such vast resources being used on a project that has virtually no chance of success. Seems like such a waste to me.
Oh well, to each his own.

$750k :o

What are they doing out there, building a space ship :ph43r:

Kegsy - May 18, 2006 12:20 PM (GMT)
I moved a 2gig P4 from WCG to this Project to try and boost our numbers.

Any chance i can get some help over here i only have 1 rig running on this project, but at the moment i am the only one genreating points on this project there are some good points to be had for DC vault here.

VAIO GRX616 - June 30, 2006 08:52 PM (GMT)
Is it small WU's that you can finish in a matter of hours or monster things like CPDN?
