Matthew Rutherford strode out onto the auditorium stage, in front of the inevitable crowd of journalists that accompanied these events. Up the back of the room, there seemed to be a reasonable crowd of universtity staff and students, which was promising, given the liberal environment that universities inevitably breed.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the wonderful city of Easton, I welcome you here today to tell you how the Big Brother party will revolutionalise education in this nation. For too long, politicians have focused on indoctrinating our children through the education system, changing the way our children are taught to suit their policies, not the needs of the children themselves. As a result, at no stage throughout the education system, from primary school through to university, are our future generations given what they truly need - a chance to excel. The Big Brother party, if elected, will introduce a scheme which will completely revamp the education system. A continuous curriculum, ranging from the day a child enters their first school to the day they exit university, should they stay in the system for that length of time. The curriculum will focus on the basics - if a student cannot read, write, and perform basic arithmatic by the time they reach university, what hope do they have? We will focus upon giving the future residents of Confundia a solid grounding a Mathematics, Science, English, History, Geography and Technology throughout primary school, so that regardless of their future path, they are well prepared. During High School, they will be allowed to branch into their areas of preference, such as the Arts and Sports, however they will still study the basics. By the time they finish High School, they will be proficient in many styles of writing, and higher order mathematics. Finally, they will continue with university as per the normal system. At every stage of this system, students will be full subsidised, yes, you heard me correctly, every component of a student's basic school needs will be paid for by the government - including university fees and accomodation costs. We are committed to ensuring that the talent of Confundia's next generation is not lost in party politics and collossal debt. Of course, we will not abandon vocational education either. There will be programs in place whereby students who are past a certain stage in their high school education can be taken on as apprentices by tradespeople, with their wages being paid in full by the government. The Big Brother party is committed to ensuring that Confundia rises above and beyond all other nations, and at the backbone of that committment is our dedication to the education system. Now, should you be interested, I am willing to take questions from anyone in the audience. Ask away." [Anyone who wishes to may take control of an NPC who is part of the audience] |

A rather ragged looking student with long tangled hair raised his hand. He turned his head left and right in an awkward motion, stood, and brushed his hair away from his face.
"Umm, isn't that gonna cost a lot? To pay for everyone to go to school, like, all the way through to college? Uh, that kinda money - where are we gonna, like, get it from?" The student glanced around nervously for a moment before quickly snapping back down into his seat. |
