Peter didn't feel comfortable putting the framed Einstein poster up until he met his roomie. Peter didn't feel comfortable having a roomie either. He's had one before, but a geriatric Aunt was considered atypical for a college age kid to be hanging out with. Time to flap his wings, get out there in the wild blue yonder and explore the social scene.

Peter hated the social scene.

Sure, he had a facebook and could twitter with the best of them. He had laughed at LOLCats when they were popular and had acted like a foo' with yo' pants on the ground, despite the fact that he didn't even known what it mean. He was hip. He knew who Das Racist was. Kept a collection of Rolling Stones under the bed. He was " with it ".

But " it " was always something distant and not altogether clear for Peter. He struggled with being part of a millenial Yeah, he was self-obsessed, but in a meek internal way. Yeah, he was tech savvy, but in a boring Tim Berners-Lee, not a sexy Mark Zuckerburg way. No one thinks hypertext is cool. Peter Parker was a nerd in a generation run by nerds. No one could look at him and think of him a future software giant. What they saw when they looked at Peter Parker was either a future chemistry teacher or a serial killer.

Still, Peter would try his best. He would smile politely and work on his slang with the slang dictionary he bought. He would be self-deprecating and always with a joke and he'll get friends, you'll see!

Reassurances aside, Peter felt nervous as he began to put away his textbook on a small shelf beside the door. He pushed his glasses up on his face and busied himself with unpacking when the door opened.

This was the best time of the year, Dick decided. The school year had officially started, but classes weren’t for another day or so to give the students that crucial ‘settling in’ period the parents and advisors all seemed so concerned about. True, it was an adjustment being away from home, but in the light of the home life Dick had had for most of his young life growing up, it was a welcome one. He was eager to get out on his own and prove to the world, and to himself, that he could take care of himself just fine. It was an added bonus that Gotham University also had top notch classes in his subject area, and a great athletics program to boot. He already had his eye on the Gotham Knights program. He had heard that many of the students here were prime athletes, as well as harboring other talents (which, in truth, intrigued Dick. He had skills, he knew, but some of the so-called ‘super powers’ he heard some of the others possessed sounded fascinating). He was confident he could hold his own though. After all, he’d been working towards this for quite some time now.

Rounding the corner on the fourth floor of the building he had been assigned to, the door to his home for the next nine months or so came into view. Speaking of other students, he wondered just what kind of roommate he’d get. He hoped it wasn’t some weirdo. Not that Dick was anti-social, or particularly judgmental, but he liked to have fun. He hoped he didn’t get saddled with a total bookworm. Then again, there were some things he liked to keep to himself as well, so someone too outgoing might be a problem as well. The problem was, he didn’t really know what to expect, as he hadn’t met his roommate yet. He could only hope at this point. He knew all too well what it could be like being forced to live with people who weren’t on your own wavelength, or at least willing to work with you on your level.

Dick had settled in early, eager to make his fresh start, and most of his stuff was already moved in; his bedding, clothes, oversized stereo, television, and of course carefully hidden materials required for his…nighttime activities. It was just some last minute personal items and his laptop left to go, and it was just those things that were currently slung over his shoulder in the worn backpack he carried, on the way up for the last trip. Dressed casually in dark, loose jeans and a gray tank with an open black zip up hoodie, the only item not in the bag was a training bo staff that he carried over one shoulder, part of his martial arts equipment. He was glad he decided to loft his bed, it gave him more room for more important things like that.

But his internal musings were interrupted as he pushed open the door to his room, for he narrowly avoided opening it into his new roommate. Luckily, he caught it before it did any damage. “Sorry, didn’t see you there,” he said, flashing a charming, but apologetic, smile over at the other boy. Dick wasn’t much to judge by appearances, but the other teen didn’t look like the type that would be giving him much trouble. In fact, he looked more like the bookworm type he had been hoping he wouldn’t get earlier. Then again, something about him gave Dick the impression he didn’t just sit around the library all day either. Only one way to find out. He extended the hand not balancing the bo to Peter. “I’m Dick; criminal justice. You must be my bunkmate.”

Peter had moved the bookcase when he got in to look for an outlet and as the door swung open it knocked into the edge and rocked it back. There was a lamp set at the edge and when the case wobbled it fell forward ad Peter found himself lunging for it before he could stop himself. The lamp landed on the flat of his palm, as if it was handed to him, and he wrapped his fingers around the base keeping it from the floor. The momentary relief was compounded by an anxiousness as he looked up and saw the figure standing there.

" Oh...hi. "

Peter got to his feet and placed the lamp on the case, pushing it further against the back wall. He dusted himself and picked the carpet lint that made the sudden migration from the floor to his face from the bridge of his nose. The man at the door introduced himself as " Dick Criminal Justice " and Peter choked back the quip that came to his throat unbidden. He cleared his throat and put out his hand. " Uh..Peter Parker. "

He pushed back his glasses. " Undeclared. "

Peter’s surprising speed and agility in catching the lamp (let’s face it, at first glance the guy didn’t look particularly graceful, particularly for someone who was nearsighted) did not go unnoticed by Dick, but he decided not to comment. He simply raised an eyebrow in obvious surprise before shaking it off. Weird, definitely, but he wasn’t going to bring up just how weird he thought it was when they had just met. That was one sure way to start things off on the wrong foot, and they were going to be living together for the foreseeable future, so it was in both their interest if he kept things as friendly as possible. Besides, he was sure everyone here must have something weird about them, right? So this guy caught lamps. It could be worse.

Slowly his eyes drifted off the lamp as it was replaced in its position and back to Peter, giving him an appraising once over as the other boy extended his hand in a sort of awkward greeting. Here went nothing. He reached forward and shook Peter firmly by the hand, the smile returning to his face in an effort to seem a bit friendlier for the moment. “Peter. A pleasure.”

Dropping his hand, Dick shifted the pack on his shoulder and placed the bow against the rail of his lofted bed. Moving quickly, he climbed, well, more like swung, up onto the ladder to his bunk and dropped off his bag, balancing himself on the top two rungs as he continued to unpack his stuff. He glanced around the room as he did so, taking in what moving in his new roommate had done. Well, he was neat enough, that was for sure. Neater than he was, anyway, he thought to himself as he noted the discarded button up hanging off one post of his bed and his gym bag lying open near the other end.

“So, Pete;” he said, trying to strike up a bit of light conversation as they worked, “Any idea what you want to do? I mean, why’d you pick Gotham U? You from around here?” If the other kid was just looking for a good school, he could have gone anywhere in the country, and while Gotham U was one of the top educational institutions, despite its relative newness, Dick didn’t know a lot of people that chose to come to Gotham unless they had a good reason.

Peter smiled to be social, but turned away and ducked back down to finish shelving the books. Back turned, he said " I'm from across the river over in Queens. They just kinda said ' twenty four hour bio-chem lab and I just couldn't help myself. I get twitchy around bunsen burners." It wasn't an easy decision though. He still felt bad for leaving Aunt May behind. It was a good thing she came into that settlement with the security company. The one that installed the burglar alarm that failed to work when the thief broke in and shot Uncle Ben. The thief that Peter let get away at the television station.

He tried not to let it show, but when he thought about he his jaw clenched and his eyes narrow. It had been two years since that faithful day but the wound was still as fresh as if it had happened yesterday. An day, an hour, didn't go past when he didn't think about it. He still had conversations with Uncle Ben in his mind, filling in the words that Ben would have said where he still here. He sometimes caught his lips moving when he was lost in thought, answering back to his Uncle's ghost.

Peter kept this particular quirk secret, of course. The last thing he needed was to attract more looks than he'd already getting. The objective was to blend into the background. For little puny Parker, the less attention lavished on him, the better. He stood up.

" Can you pass me that box over there. " He said, pointing to the box on the bottom bunk.

Dick chuckled good naturedly at Peter’s explanation as he continued with his own unpacking. “So you’re a science geek, huh? I might hit you up for some homework help,” he said, jokingly, the comment intended to be casual and not offensive. He himself enjoyed science, though he found no particular joy in putting in any sort of long hours to the task if something more interesting was going on unless it had to do with figuring out new gadgets he could work into his vigilante routine. That sort of science was practical, interesting, and innovative. The other kind…well, while he found it interesting, let’s just say Dick didn’t have the longest attention span for academics that required that much focus all the time.

He slid the last item out of the bag he had brought in with him; a sleek silver case that looked as though it might be a hard-cover laptop bag, were it not for the lock on the outside. He glanced quickly over his shoulder at his roommate, but he seemed fairly well absorbed in whatever it was he was doing with his books. It was just as well. As outgoing as Dick could be, and as friendly as he usually was, there were some things that he preferred to keep to himself, and this was one of them. Inside were his personal effects from his time with the circus; photos, gifts, his old costume; things he couldn’t bear to part with, but not things he felt particularly comfortable displaying for everyone to see. So much had happened then…so much had happened since then…it was almost hard to believe that this was the same life he was living.

Climbing down a couple of rungs, Dick tucked the case securely under the end of the mattress, where he figured it would be largely safe from potential prying eyes or fingers. He then slung his now empty pack over the top of the end post, letting it hang limply as he turned to see what else remained to be done.

Dick nodded as Peter asked him to pass him the box. “I’ve got my eye on the Gotham Knights program myself,” he said, picking up on the earlier part of the conversation as he hopped down the rest of ladder to the floor. He bent down and hefted up the box with a grunt. It was heavier than it looked. “Geez, what do you have in here?” he asked as he brought the box over to Peter.
