| “SK: They are going to drink a lot of coffee this season. But I don’t know at what temperature these coffees are going to be served. They sure are going to taste sweeter and sweeter. On season 4, we will alternate, sometimes he will bring it to me and sometimes the opposite. [spoiler] I’ll tell you a secret: It will happen that Castle will bring coffee to another woman this season. Don’t tell anyone.[/spoiler] NF: “You’re right to think that the coffee is symbolic, it reveals so many things! Doesn’t matter who brings it to the other, it’s like our morning kiss. One way to say without actually saying it “Good morning my heart, how are you doing? Did I put enough sugar in your coffee? Did I stir it well enough?” But if Castle brings coffee to someone else….oh Lord, there’s going to be trouble! The coffee can become bitter.” — Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic about Caskett coffee. | The two stars of Castle are in disaccord about one thing: Stana Katic wants their characters to finally live their mad passion, but Nathan Fillion thinks that will kill the series. In season 3, the writers amuse themselves in any case by multiplying the ambiguous situations between the two detectives [their mistake, not mine :)]. Explanations. Castle is surrounded by women who take charge [literally 'wield the baton'], is this an aspect of the character that you appreciate? Stana: Thoroughly, because often, it's the opposite on tv than in life. There, it's Beckett who has that quality most of the time. She adores giving orders to Castle and I believe that he must be a bit masochistic because he asks for more! (laughs) Nathan: You're absolutely right, my character adores when women take things in hand. He didn't know his father and he never had a masculine authority in his life. His mother is a strong woman and his daughter, who he loves more than anything, only has to bat her eyelashes to make him do what she wants. Castle adores having women direct his life and there he succeeds pretty well. He's attracted to Kate just because she never lets him off the leash. [I think that's right? There's a lot of slang here.] It's clear that Castle is crazy for Beckett. Then why hasn't he told her already that he loves her? Nathan: Exactly because he's crazy about her. He doesn't want to risk losing her by revealing his feelings too early. Having said that, Castle is really transparent. It's clear to everyone that he wants her. But he doesn't dare be the first because he's afraid she'll push it away. I have to say, Beckett isn't easy to woo. Stana: It's true. She protects her feelings a lot. She's not afraid of anything in her work, and she's capable of facing down the worst scum. But Castle destabilises her. At the beginning, he drove her nuts, but very quickly she understood that this character she admired from afar as a writer deserves to be known. She began to appreciate his humour and she very quickly fell in love. But don't count on her to reveal that in the near future. TPTB seem in effect to be doing everything to impede their love story, but you, would you like that they become a couple right now? Stana: If it was up to me, Castle and Beckett would already be together! Maybe I'm naive and romantic, but I believe that a relationship can be just as exciting when the characters are a couple and not just when they're dancing around each other. These two are so different that their love story could never be boring. They'll never stop arguing, even after they declare their love. I don't believe that it would kill the series. Nathan: Admit that you only want to kiss me more often! (laughs) Stana: And you admit that you don't want to! That's why you don't want to see them together! (laughs) Nathan: It's true, I don't want Castle and Beckett to take the leap. The viewers watch the show in the hope of seeing them fall for one another but when it happens they'll drop it fast enough and go elsewhere. It's a curse that hits the show, like the case of Moonlighting, there's scientific proof! [ARGH NATHAN SHUT UP!!!] The series rests quite heavily on these back and forth exchanges. Is there a lot of improvisation in your scenes? Stana: Yes, enormously. Not only in the dialogue, but also physically. There's a lot of comedy that's due to our gestures and expressions and none of that is written in the scripts. They're the things that we spontaneously imagine on the stage. We spend a lot of time adding gags so the show stays light, even if we are solving murders every week. Nathan: We always arrange ourselves to propose gags and different falls [takes?] at the end of each scene. That way, the editors can chose to end the scene on a joke or not, all depending on the mood they want to create. Personally, I prefere when the show is comic more than too dramatic. What's the thing you most prefer about your respective characters? Nathan: I love that Castle is anything but macho. He's got more the attitude of a child than of an adult and that pleases me. In effect, he's hasn't really left childhood. I love that scene where he says to his daughter 'be patient with me, pardon me, because I've never been the father of an adolescent.' It's me that found that reply when we were working with the writers at the very start of the series, and I found that really describes Castle well. Stana: I love Beckett's imperfections. I have affection for her way of being without a clue in love [? literally beside the plate -- it's a hard bit of slang to translate]. She doesn't always make the right choices, but at least she tries. |

| According to rumors, Castle is expected to declare his love to Beckett at the end of Season 3… SK: Are you sure we’re talking about Richard Castle? Yes, yes, don’t leave us hanging! SK: (laughs) Beckett, it’s true, will discover that Castle has feelings for her. In unusual circumstances, he will confess his love. But things aren’t that simple. We still don’t know whether they both share equally strong feelings about each other. NF: the strongest appeal of the show comes from the relationship between those two very different people… One is outgoing, not afraid to put his cards on the table. The other, not so open. You two, Stana and Nathan, would you like your characters to finally get in a romantic relationship? SK: Viewers enjoy the dance between the characters. They keep testing, challenging each other. If we gave the viewers what they seem to be asking for, the two characters declaring their undying love for each other, getting married… that would be the end of the series.! I do not want them to get together! (laughs). NF: That’s what happened with Moonlighting. From the moment the two heroes fell into each other’s arms, the audience stopped watching and the series ended. According to Andrew Marlowe, the detective and the writer are two hearts beating for each other mais not to the same rhythm, at least right now. According to you, what does Castle appreciate the most in Beckett? NF: her persistence, her honesty, her sense of loyalty. What physical attribute do they each adore about the other? NF: he loves watching her run in high heels and tight skirts. And he loves to see the sparkle in her eyes when she finds a clue. SK: With his perfectly tailored suits, this guy has a lot of class! And, what she can’t resist, is that he’s still a kid at heart. What does Beckett find the most annoying about Castle? And him about her? SK: He’s cocky. And a bit of a “know-it-all” which is exasperating. And keeps reminding them when he’s right. NF: Beckett is too serious, too strict. She could be more spontaneous, relaxed and simply say how she feels. Coffee is an important element of their relationship, a barometer. In the 3rd season, is it cold, lukewarm or downright hot? SK: what I can say is that they’re going to consume a lot of coffee. However, I can’t reveal the temperature… But it’ll get sweeter and sweeter! (Translator’s note: Don’t you just LOVE this woman!!). Also, if we go further in S4, they will take turns. One time, I’ll make coffee for Castle, next time, he will make coffee for her. I’ll let you on a little secret: Castle is even going to bring coffee to someone else… another woman. But don’t tell anyone. NF: you’re right to mention the symbolic use of coffee in the relationship between the two characters, it reveals so much of what’s going on between them! Whichever of the two brings the coffee, it’s like our morning kiss. A way to say without using a word: “good morning Sweetheart. How are you? Did I put enough sugar in your coffee? Did I mix it well?” (translator’s note: thank you for the tease and the laugh Nathan!). But if Castle brings coffee to someone else, ouch! There’s trouble in the air! The taste could become bitter. Castle is very successful in France. What are some of the most common questions asked by your French fans? SK: I receive a lot of marriage proposals! (translator’s note: judging by her FB fan page and Twitter, she’s not kidding!) NF: yes, me too! No, that’s not true, just kidding. Right now, it’s mostly requests for autographs. French is called the language of love. You’re Canadian, do you speak French? SK: A little bit! (translator’s note: she’s being modest. She speaks Fluent French). NF: The gentleman asked you if you speak French! You have to reply to him in his language and with the correct accent. Make him happy, if you please. SK: (with a Parisian accent a little forced) (translator’s note: actually I thought she had a Quebecois accent which is where she learned as a kid). Yes I speak French. In this case, what is your favorite word in French? SK: What a question! Love, of course! Speaking about France, do you know, Nathan, that our French Prime Minister has almost the same last name as you? His name is Francois Fillon. NF: Yes, I knew that. But in my name, there’s an extra I. My ancestors were French mais they first moved to the US, then they emigrated to Canada a very long time ago. I can’t tell you exactly when. But you’re giving me an idea. As soon as I can take time off Beckett’s cases, I’ll do some research on the subject. What Nathan appreciates about Stana How fast she memorizes her lines. I’m slow. I always have to stumble on words. What does Stana appreciates about Nathan He never takes himself seriously. (translator’s note: next and last sentence is clearly French translation of an English expression but can’t think of which one. I found two possible explanations but don’t want to words in Stana’s mouth. She COULD mean that Nathan is always ready for a joke or to have fun, like a bottle of bubbly – champagne – someone shook too hard. Lol. OR she COULD mean “bubble pop” - if French translation is almost a literal translation – which I found to mean “to invade somebody’s personal space (their aura) and be too touchy/up-close-and-personal.” according to the Urban Dictionary. OR she means something else entirely and I don’t know what that is without the original English reply). TV Grandes Chaines 2011 |

![]() The writers seem to be doing everything possible to keep them apart. What about you, do you want them to hook up? SK: If it was for me Castle and Beckett would be together already. I might be naive and romantic but I think a relationship can be exciting even when the couple gets together. Those two are so different that they would never turn out be boring. Them getting together would never ruin the show. NF: Admit it, all you want is to kiss me more. *laugh* SK: And Admit that you don’t want to kiss me! That’s why you don’t want them together *laugh* NF: It’s true I don’t want them together yet. The public watches the show because they like their dance, they like to see them go there. But when they will get there, fans will most likely lose interest. It’s a curse, like the Moonlighting course. It’s been proved scientifically. ...... It’s clear that Castle is crazy about Beckett. Then why didn’t he tell her sooner that he loves her? NF: He doesn’t want to lose her revealing his feelings for her too soon. He’s very transparent about what he feels anyway. It’s clear to everyone that he loves her. But he doesn’t dare doing the first move for fear of her rejection. SK: It’s true, she’s very guarded about her feelings. Nothing on the job scares her but Castle destabilizes her. At the beginning she thought he was annoying but soon she realizes he’s very different from the famous writer everyone else knows. She began to appreciate him and soon she fell in love with him. Nathan and Stana Series Magazine |

| Were you nervous at the idea of kissing Stana? NF: When there is a lady to kiss, I do know what to do. It was a French kiss or a Hollywood one? NF: On tv we’re asked not to use tongue!! Do you think it’s been the kiss in 3x13 to have made Castle confess his love in 3x24? NF: No, it’s the dramatic situation that leads Castle to declare his love for Beckett. You disagree with Stana on the fact that Castle and Beckett should get together already… NF: Yeah, no one has doubts that Castle and Beckett will get together. They need to be followed on this journey. Season 4 will be centered on the secrets that these two characters are keeping from each other. Their story and how they get together is what keeps the public interested. How would you describe your relationship with Stana? NF: After 4 years we know each other pretty well and I know I can count on her. She has a way with the juridical jargon and the interrogation scenes! She’s super professional! Castle has the habit at the precint of bringing coffee to Beckett every morning. Do you do the same with Stana at the studios? NF: Not really. We say “good morning” in the make up room, we discuss our scenes of the day and where our characters go in the episode. But I’m glad you have noticed Castle’s attentions to coffee. In my opinion with it it’s like he gives her a good morning kiss every morning. Which qualities do you like the most about Castle? NF: He believes he’s cool and interesting in all circumstances. It’s a strength….well, only until a certain point. When he doesn’t realize he should cool down a bit, he can become too much. You had a second role in Buffy and Desperate Housewives. You’ve been the star of the series Firefly. You’re known at Hollywood. Are you proud of you’ve achieved? NF: Absolutely! The probabilities of a Canadian with both parents working as English teachers becoming an actor and known in LA, are very slim. I was destined to be a teacher, I discovered the comedy when I was at high school. When I understood that I could be an actor and make it a real job I never looked back. |
