Fairy tales want people to think
That dreams really do come true
That “happily ever after”
Is attainable for you

Fairy tales somehow manage
To bewitch and to beguile
Those whom they target
Into seeing only the ending smiles

But if you restart at each beginning
You find a common thread
A simple oversight of most
And a discovery causing dread

The simple truth they try to eschew
Is that the princess has not reappeared
It never speaks of her happiness
That was so readily cheered

Since kings are merely princes
Who’ve ascended to their throne
Once the princess has begot an heir
She must be somehow overthrown

For in her place we now find
A rather evil personage
Intent on wreaking havoc
In an overplayed montage

The former prince’s heart
A wicked stepmother has gained
That “they lived happily ever after”
Was obviously feigned

And thus we now arrive
At yet another story’s start
Where once again we’re told
That “never did they part”

Forgetting the beginning
And only focusing on the “end”
Easily misleading
Merely starting the cycle again.
