Let's all imagine a perfect world. Where everybody's happy. Nobody fails, and nobody's disowned. Now, let's take that world, and add feuds, fights, make ups, and break ups. Let's add some unreasonable hatred, maybe some unrequited love, and a Romeo-and-Juliet-like romance. Possibly some laziness, and a bit of confusion. And definitely some tears, death and magic. Now, that's more like it!
Their sixth year is beginning. Five years have come and gone, now Dumbledore's back from his trip to look for those damned Horcuxes. But, let's stop there. Yes, right there. What if Dumbledore DIDN'T put on the ring? What if he hadn't been foolish enough to allow that ring to slip onto his finger, and curse him to only one more year of life? Things may have been a bit different, no? Yes, I believe it would be. Harry wouldn't have had to be taught about the Horcruxes quite yet, and he'd only to worry about some more trivial things.
Voldemort seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth, now that he's out in the open. Which would change things, no? Draco may not have the deed of killing Dumbledore any more. The Death eaters wouldn't be killing somebody new every two seconds, and things would seem a bit less tense. Of course, now most Aurors are abroad searching for this madman, but still, nobody can seem to find him!
But, they sure as hell can find his son. Yes-- a son. Bellatrix certainly was all fine to bear Voldemort's son. While she's been in Azkaban, the boy was enrolled into school in Bulgaria. But, now that she's out, and Voldemort's missing, I suppose there was nothing to stop her from transfering him, was there? No, Ashford Riddle was tranfered for his sixth year to be in Hogwarts. But, there's been a snag. He's not what Bellatrix had hoped. Sure, he was a good Pureblood boy. But, guess which house? Gryffindor. Of course, he's nowhere near being accepted by all the Gryffindors-- not at all. He is the dark lord's son, isn't he?
Let's get back to the focus. Sixth year. Harry Potter's the Quiddich Captain, so, he's to find two new chasers, and beaters. So, naturally, that's going to be stressful, even more so with his best friends bickering about every little thing every two minutes. Add the fact he's got mixed feelings for his best mate's little sister, and well, that's what's up.
There's a new Minister as well. Fudge was kicked out as soon as the Wizarding world found out how he was lying to them, and accusing Dumbledore of being a fraud, and Harry unstable. Now, this new Minister is harsher, harder working, and hoping he can get Harry Potter on the Ministry's side. But, that's not the only new person. Introducing... Horace Slughorn! He's round, he's been around forever, and he's the new Potions master! How lovely. But, that means Snape is the Sefense against the dark arts teacher, sadly. And almost no students even approve. But, Dumbledore's got his reasons. However insane they may be, he's brilliant isn't he? Mental, but brilliant.
So, that's the gist of it. People are kind of calming down now that they're... somewhat safe. And Voldemort's hiding, for some reason. Maybe he's looking for something? Who knows! The sixth years are working on their studies, and other things. Everything's normal.... or, at least, as normal as a Wizarding world can be, honestly.
