Our Story Begins... Lord Matthew Wexcombe, a wealthy merchant and baronet from Pennsylvania, moved his family to a large piece of land on the outskirts of Sleepy Hollow. Having ignored the area’s silly superstitions and ghost stories, Wexcombe decided the country would be the perfect setting to raise his family and to escape the demanding city life. Wexombe’s property included the greater portion of the Western Woods and to earn the family extra income, he planned to rent an acre or two of his land to those willing to work it.
After the lord’s family had settled into their comfortable ranch home, Wexcombe sent half a dozen of his men into the woods to search for squatters, stragglers, and the undesired rogue in order to remove them from his property. While amidst their search the men came upon the hovel of an old crone. Deeming her a raving lunatic, the men dragged her from her home and urged her to leave the land. They were cruel with their taunts and jeers and damned her to hell for the craft like objects she kept hidden in her home.
Amongst the crone’s collection of dark objects, herbs, bottled potions, and similar contraband, was the skull of a man. Angered and disgusted by this treachery against all that was holy, one of the men smashed the skull. The old witch cursed the men and the land they dwelled upon. She raved that the Headless Horseman would forever haunt their dreams and their lives until the day he took each of their heads for his own. Wexcombe’s men torched the hovel and watched it burn to the ground before taking the hag back to the village to be hanged.
Less than a day later, one by one Wexcombe’s men were slain in open ground, found with their heads lopped off. Lord Wexcombe feared for his family, since it had been his men that had been massacred, and fled with them in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, they could not outrun the Hessian Trooper on his demon steed and they swiftly met their grisly end. The entire Wexcombe family was found murdered the next day, with their heads missing. Beware, for the Hessian is on the rampage, cutting of heads where he finds them.
