One of the most popular series recently! I was actually surprised to see no thread for it, lol!

A summary from wiki for those who aren't aware ( you should go read it right now!! ) :

Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series centers around a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name and picturing his or her face. The plot follows his attempt to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, and the complex conflict between himself and those assailing him that results.

My personal opinion would be to rather read the manga than watch the anime. No doubt, if you directly aim for the anime, it will strike you as good. But trust me, it's absolutely nothing compared to the complexity and ingenuity of the manga. The anime is very hurried and is surely commercially targeted. I definitely did not appreciate the way they totally cut down the anime. I mean, what exactly was going on in the last part of it? There was hardly any Mello or Matt, most of the people were behaving pretty unnaturally ( and psychotically ), and there was a completely abrupt end. Also, Misa's character was very much undermined from what it actually was in the manga-- she simply isn't a fool, that's for sure. What I didn't understand was why did they have to rush the whole thing after L's death? Was it because many people, including me, had left reading the manga after L's death? But hell, there was no way I wouldn't read it till the end-- Ryuuk's just too awesome for that, lol. The anime was quite reasonable as far as the plot was concerned, but it suddenly wrecked down asa Near and Mello made their appearance. Light's vision begun to falter, Near's quite blatant ideas didn't seem to get through any of the Japan team... it just started feeling stupid. Even though Light did become a bit over-confident, he'd have a reason to-- Near and/or Mello didn't compare to him ( +Mikami+Misa ), which is one of the major reasons why the ending appeared so farce.

Overall, it quashed the high expectations which had arised from the manga quite a lot. And for people like me-- who were keeping a track of the releases-- it was a big disappointment. And I'd so loved the characters, too~!!

I only watch some episodes from this series*I think 10...* and read the manga till L's dead...>.<
But the anime isn't that good so I stopped watching... I think because I was so disappointed

I've been wondering about Death Note for awhile now. I've been wanting to get the anime, but I think that, like you said, getting the manga first is a better idea. I want something I can watch with my husband that won't gross him out. (He is NOT a yaoi fan, hehe.). Death Note looks really awesome, but complex, which I like. I just got done watching Blood+, and it was fabulous. I like action-y stuff, but with good plots and pretty art. Thanks for the summary, Jade! It helped me to decide.

Yeah the manga's way better. At the very least it's more tolerable during the near-mello arc than the anime. The anime holds your attention till L's death and then unwinds somehow. Aaaaaannnnndddd...the ending sucked like anything. Most unrealistic ending evah imo!

I haven't gotten to reading the manga yet so I wouldn't know..but the anime was pretty good..the moves sucked ass though >.>

The plot and twists are awesome in death note, although I raelly liked the manga more than the anime. I'm not really a fan of the animation in death note >.>

I stopped reading when L died too...besides, at the time, the scans weren't very good quality so...>_<.

I didn't really like the anime; it was just kind of "meh" to me. I did manage to finish the manga at long last though!

It is a really interesting series though. I love evil things. ^_^

I haven't watched it yet, but I should, because I've heard good things about it, I liked the manga, and, this is silly, I know, but Light's VA is Tamaki's (from Ouran)!

it's so different to everything that has come out in the past!!!! *__*
and not only the plot is great, but also the drawing style is. which is kind of miracle really. it's not easy to have both in only one manga/anime...

(and there are plenty of doujins about DN, so for every yaoi fan it will be an easy work to find 'em XD LOL)

I've read four volumes of the manga and watched the whole anime.. I think it's great, but it bothers me that I haven't read the manga version of the end. After watching the anime after the four volumes of the manga it seemed so identical that I thought that it was pretty much the same. :/ That's why I didn't buy rest of the manga. But I probably should.. But yeah, it's a great series anyway. *3* And pretty unique, because if you compare it to the other shounen series it's.. well, somehow more intelligent maybe? :'DD And the story is better written, too. But yeah, I must check the manga ending someday.
