Spiderman. Xmen. Daredevil. The Punisher. The Hulk. Fantastic Four. Ghost Rider. TMNT. Batman Begins. Superman Returns. Transformers. In the new millennium, Hollywood has latched on to making new versions of all the classic comic book superhero stories, retelling the classics in a modern light, updating our childhood heroes for a new generation to discover on the big screen. Before there was Pokemon and YuGiOh, there were stories of heroes with their OWN powers, and with those powers, came great responsibility. Or, you know, dark tales of revenge. Who thinks the cinematic new takes do the original series' justice? With the exception of one or two on the list, I sure do. I personally love how the new Batman doesn't focus on nipples and crotches and not much else, for one.

So I went in with you and Corey to see Ironman for the sake of his birthday. I had very low expectations of the movie. I was very pleasantly surprised.
I don't know the original character portrayed in comics or older cartoons. I recall him being a bad guy, but maybe I just assumed he was because he looked more typical of a villain than of a hero. So I can't judge whether or not the movie did the original any justice, or if it was barely relative whatsoever. But I thought that this was a very good movie. The humour was great, and the ending an absolute classic breaking free of the typical superhero restraints. Batman Begins and Superman Returns were definitely great comebacks for those two movie series. I want to see Batman and Batman Returns again. And I probably want to see Superman 1, 2 and 4 a few more times. Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, and Superman 3 can go on unwatched for all I care...though I would defintiely choose one of those two Batman movies that focus all on the fake nipples and crotches over that terrible excuse for a Superman movie. I have never seen Hulk or Hellboy [or whoever that one was], and don't plan on it. There's a new Incredible Hulk one coming out soon. The Hulk ones all seem good to me, except for the fact that they're the Incredible Hulk. He's too corny a superhero for me. When I saw the enemy in the ad for the new one, I thought that was going to be the Hulk, redesigned. And that peaqued my intrigue, because he seemed less corny that way. I was disappointed to see that I was mistaken. The first of the current set of Spiderman movies I really liked. There was some supervillainy corniness [especially pertaining to the disintegration ray's effects on people and the initial Power Rangers-esque appearance of the Green Goblin [thankfully it turned out that it was a mask...so there was movement of his mouth underneath that thing when he was speaking [I'm pretty sure in one of the cartoon series I watched of it, he didn't have a mask - that was actually his face]]], but the story, plot and capacity for the actors to actually act overpowered such dilemmas. Spiderman 2 had less corny effects, but the people always running around and screaming at the camera got a thumbs down from me. Spiderman 3 got rid of all the corniness as far as I remember, but then the acting was attrocious. Seeing as it had mostly the same actors in it, I think we can blame the director and editing crew at least a little for this, and assume that maybe they screwed up and put the wrong takes into the final cut. Nonetheless, it was about as unepic as Superman 3. I'll end this post here. |

Well, I hadn't seen much of the Ironman series (in animated form, and far less in comic form) I just knew that it was a rich guy named Tony Stark dressing up in a red and yellow "Iron" suit and doing (possibly heroic) things. That's why I recognised the franchise as soon as I heard the name "Stark" when I first saw the trailer. As for the movie, itself, it was awesome (something which, despite what some may tell you, I don't label just anything with). Transformers was awesome. Spiderman 3, not so much, but then again, I'm probably influenced by others' criticism (I thought it was good enough...not awesome, but still a good watch).
As for the Hulk, I don't know what to say...it's not like they didn't do a movie about it a few years ago (past the dawn of this millennium, at least). And this one seems totally different. It's like the Transformers franchise which, ironically, I don't mind. Transformers is about Transforming robots going to war, so it's not such a bad thing if they have multiple series with different plots, giving some well known names to applicable characters (Optimus Prime is a...prime example), but with the Hulk - this new movie is quite different in essence than the last. It's like they don't have a framework for the franchise. ...then again, the basis for the Hulk is that Bruce Banner gets blasted by radiation, and turns in to a great big green mutant when he's angry. If you've ever heard of the Hulk, this shouldn't be spoiling anything for anyone. If it is, what rock have you been hiding under for the last century. That's enough for one post. More later. ...maybe... |

two questions: 1) That was spoiling it for you? I'm slightly disappointed; and 2) That was in Canada? |
