Lights flashed off oversized gems and the overwhelming scent of innumerable perfumes nearly arose a vague feeling of nausea in Kory's throat, but she had been to enough of these events for it not to bother her. Granted, she hadn't been to many, as her career had skyrocketed beyond malls early on, but there were some events that occurred in malls that were legendary to the fashion world. Killinger's was not only historical for Gotham but for the fashion industry, decorated as glamorously as the people who walked its halls.

The entire mall shut down for the event. It wasn't uncommon for the mall to shut down for such events, and the event was so elite it wasn't publicized. It was for the who's-who in the industry and, according to Kory's 'assistant' (honestly, the woman seemed to have more control over Kory's life than she did, but since she wasn't hero-ing here did it really matter?), it was a great honor for Kory to be invited. Okay. Sure. Another event, why not? After all, what else had she to do...besides, she did enjoy the fashion industry. Her people never invested much time in clothing, so to see what humans could do with cloth and other things astounded Kory. She always worried she wasn't doing their clothing justice when wearing it, regardless of what other people told her. This dress in particular she appreciated. She could feel it weighing on her and she wondered if the designer knew she wasn't human to carry the weight. While others admired her dress, she spent no less time admiring others, complimenting designers and enthusiastically asking questions. She tried giving helpful responses when asked in returned and they seemed to honestly consider her opinions, but Kory had little idea of how fashion actually worked and just tried commenting on what she liked. It was an art form she never imagined existed before coming to Earth, and fully enjoyed indulging herself in when she wasn't protect the people who had the potential to create such wonderful things.

So far, those two aspects of her life she managed to keep separate, but the sound of breaking glass gave her more than enough reason to think otherwise. A few people, men and women alike, screamed in shock as a gang of people dressed up like the designs on those pieces of cardboard used for games they kept in the Tower for rainy days. Something about Poke-her? "Alright, plebes, let's keep this neat and tidy, shall we? We wouldn't want to ruin the rest of your evening. All we want are the jewels and cash, keep your silly clothes, and we will be on our way." The model Kory had been speaking to clung to her arm, holding her back, for the moment, as she watched the event's security attempt to deal with the problem. This wasn't her city, it wasn't her place to step in, but as she watched them fight and the police fall her anger began to boil. She managed to keep her glamor on, though, as she pulled the model off from her arm and stepped up.

"You have no right to do this. Give these people back their things and leave while you still are able," Kory warned, every bit a queen in her dress and voice. The Gang just looked at each other and a couple laughed. "My dear, I don't think you quite understand...we're the ones letting you leave, with far more than most would," one of the males of the group explained, stepping towards her, all charm. Her eyes narrowed and her hands balled into fists. She fumed as he caressed her cheek with bent fingers. "Although I have to say, that is a beautiful dress. I might have to make an exception for it," he added. Kory wrapped her fingers around his wrist and moved his hand away. "Attempt to touch me again and you will find yourself lacking hands." Fury flashed across his face and without warning his pulled out his ruby-topped cane and attempt to hit her, but much to his surprise she caught it with one hand and ripped it out of his grasp. She tossed it to the side. "I suggest you leave," she added. A shout caught her ear and she turned to see another member of the Gang holding a woman in front of him. Her eyes narrowed. Innocent hostages. "We will, as soon as we're finished here. Now, be a good girl, and no harm will come to you or her," said the other man. The first grabbed her arm and whispered into her ear. She bristled and her eyes began to glow. "Fine, I'll be a good girl. I'm much better than you know."

As much as he hated to say it, Dick was glad that he was currently chasing down a villain of the good old-fashioned sort. Meaning, of course, that while they probably had plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there was no supernatural air lingering around them. He'd even take a scattering of superhuman villains to lighten the heavy air that hung over Gotham, but these old vanilla sorts would do just fine.

He'd picked up on hints of the heist that would be going down on some sort of private event, but he hadn't pegged down the location until tracking them to where they had just broken in. The mall? Really? Out of all Gotham's extravagant architecture, the event coordinator had chosen the mall? Well, to each their own. At least the place was closed down for the night, but there was no telling how many people would be inside.

At the sounds of screams from inside, Dick closed in on the window that the party crashers had used for their entrance. Great. Guns and hostages, he thought, as he did a quick headcount of the gang members. Out numbered as usual, but it wouldn't be something he had never dealt with before. He lifted his hand, the spaces between his fingers lined with a smoke pellet and two batarangs. He was about to launch into the fight when a voice rang clear as wonder woman's skin rang through the air.

Kory. Starfire. He'd know that voice anywhere. Three words into her speech and he had spotted her. A grin curled onto his lips. Ok, so maybe the odds were in their favor- even if he hadn't arrived. It was a good thing that Dick had some semblance of self-control, because he would have laughed out loud if he could have. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

He couldn't see it from where he was all the way across the room, but he could feel her anger reverberating with her words. It would almost be for the thug's sake that Dick stepped in.

With the hostage taken in front of Kory, Dick didn't hesitate a moment longer. He flicked his hand into the room; the smoke pellet exploded on contact with the floor, and two batarangs collided with the back of the man's head. He flipped into the room, pulling two escrima sticks from his back. One quickly met the back of the nearest confused thug, sending him down.

"EVERYONE DOWN," He roared, and a small gaggle of wailing girls nearby ducked down, covering their heads.

"It's the Bat!" he heard one gang-member yell, a note of fear in his voice. It wasn't the reaction he had been looking for, but he'd take it for as long as the surprise lasted.

"Oh shit, she's hot." "We all have eyes, Jack, though I'd wager you don't even--" "No, I mean she's HOT." With a cry of pain the man let go of her arm, clasping a raw and steaming hand. Her natural state was not one humans could handle. She was pure sunlight intertwined with flesh, if humans looked at her when she let out all her light their eyes would melt. With that repercussion, it make keeping certain degrees of glamor all the more important, but since her powers were fueled by her emotions it was occasionally difficult for her to do so. It wasn't a matter of loosing control like Raven, it was simply that Kory didn't want to. She embraced her emotions. Her rage from the man's comment, the minute satisfaction of seeing him suffer.

Unfortunately, that was the easy part. As it was, she had exposed more about herself than she should have--but what else could she do? They had a hostage, and she knew how ineffective Earth's police were, and she had been warned Gotham's was one of the most corrupt. Nevertheless, she wasn't going to put a false identity over another person's safety.

Luckily, it didn't look like she'd have to. Were she thinking of anything but how to keep people safe, she might have wondered why Gotham's corps of vigilantes hadn't shown up, but she wasn't one to ever think of anyone coming to save her. Smoke filled the room and she smiled. Once the fight was over, they would have to talk, but for a few more precious minutes they could do what they did best, together.

Hidden by smoke, she jumped into the fight, and if anyone thought a silly dress would serious inhibit her they had another thing coming. She shuttled the girl whose assailant Dick already knocked unconscious out of the fray, for her own safety and to get her out of the way as Kory took her place behind Dick, her back to his. Just like old times. Which was a particular good thing, because if it wasn't for Dick teaching her the ways of Earth's heroes her fighting style would still be lethal. She still didn't quite understand the notion of letting an enemy live, but with Dick's presence there would be no chance of her forgetting how fragile humans were.

"They are not very observant," Kory noted at the "Bat" comment. "Hello, Nightwing." She didn't risk letting loose any star-bolts, not here. The smoke gave them shelter and surprise, she wasn't going to ruin that with a bolt of light. Now this was what she was supposed to be doing. Fighting those who wanted to harm others, protecting those who couldn't protect themselves--a scream and oh god, no! reached her ears and she turned to see through the receding fog one of the crooks shoving an incendiary grenade into someone's shocked hands and running away with the pin.

"Nightwing!" She managed to cry within the two seconds she had to react to the grenade. Two seconds before it would explode, nearly four thousand degrees in the poor human's hands. She snatched it out of the young girl's hand and tossed it up as high as she could, and who knows where it might have ended up if it didn't go off so quickly. Kory could feel the heat, igniting her dress as she shielded whoever she could, the whole room illuminated to a point that no doubt would have put spots in front of her eyes had she been human. These were not the weapons of a common crook back in San Fransisco. People weren't kidding that Gotham was a whole different world when such items were considered standard.

"I know. I look much better in black than he does," Dick couldn't help but smirk, as Kory joined him in the smoke. The film over his mask allowed him to see through it clearly, and he glanced back at her over his shoulder. It was indeed a shock to run into here, but not enough to leave him speechless. He had known she was in town. Hell, he'd seen her at the Valentine's Gala. Who hadn't? Dick didn't want to say that it had been the nerves that kept him away from speaking with her. Things had ended on a rough note between them, but he had never stopped considering her a friend. He had never stopped caring.

So what had he been waiting for? An opportune moment? A private moment? He should have known that such things would never be graced to him. Now, he had no choice but to work with her, back-to-back, old style. Frankly, that was fine with him. A grin curled onto his lips, and he cast his gaze quickly out through the smoke. A film over his lenses allowed him to see clearly enough through it, and he stuck his baton into the ribs of a nearby stumbling thug. The man choked, and Dick delivered the second escrima stick against his gun-wielding wrist before the thick man could even pull the trigger.

He was about to make another comment to Kory when she cried out, and his gaze swung around to land on the incendiary grenade. Dick ground his teeth together as he dove to cover the nearest patrons; two slender girls in bright dresses. Gathering them in his arms, he covered them the best that he could. He could feel the heat at his back, singing his hair and burning hot against the Kevlar weave that made up his uniform. He'd have a nice sunburn in the morning. One of the girls under him screamed, realizing that the hem of her dress had caught fire. Dick quickly folded the fabric over on itself to pat it out, as he swung his gaze over his shoulder to take in the damage. The lenses in his mask again automatically adjusted to the bright lighting, but it still felt like he was looking at shadows.

That had been unexpected. Guns and grenades, sure, but incendiary? That was particularly nasty. Dick had seen crooks use grenades to blast escape holes just as often as he had seen them used in offense. Incendiary grenades were produced to cause destruction and detraction.

"Go," He hissed at the two sobbing girls below him, pushing them to their feet. "Nearest exit. Take as many as you can." The sobbing girls clutched each other, and with another shove they were off. Thankfully, the grenade seemed to have proven just as disastrous against the criminals. Many were on the ground clutching their heads or patting out their burning clothing. But the rest were on their feet, moving across the room at a hasty pace with a hostage clutched underarm.

"Get them out of here," He yelled to the nearest trembling security personnel, as he swung his gaze to find his old team member even as he began to move after the retreating enemy. "Kory!"

A smile crossed Kory's face, but otherwise she did not relax in the slightest. She was poised for battle, and while they might be fighting something as trivial as crooks in a mall, she wouldn't let the familiar feeling of his suit's fabric against the skin of her back distract her in the slightest. She simply accepted the pitter-patter of her heart after not seeing him for so long for what it was, and by doing so it was such a minor feeling in comparison to the task at hand she thought nothing more of it. She focused on the civilians, the crooks, her surroundings, and the state of her partner, and by knowing him so well, she knew she didn't have to focus on him much. She would react to him and he would react to her, but they could trust each other to handle the situation own their own. It hadn't always been that way, not when Kory was more prone to kill someone than disable, a custom she still had to think about before battle. It went against all her instincts and training to let her enemy live when he could be better eliminated, but she nevertheless accepted it. For the most part.

"Run, I'll be right behind you," she ordered, her voice stern. All its sunny cheerfulness were gone at the sight of battle and none objected. One gasped and pointed at her dress, but Kory ushered her away, then took care of the flames licking at her flesh. She was already up on her feet when Dick called her name, her eyes narrowing at the sight of another hostage. She knew not to expect much from criminals, but a part of her honestly wondered how they hadn't learned by now that maybe hostages weren't the best idea. Then again, the likelihood of grabbing another girl with superpowers wasn't much, at least not in Gotham. Metropolis, maybe, but not so much here.

With the civilians gone and the security cameras destroyed by the explosion, whatever restraint Kory forced upon herself to keep her identity secret vanished. Perhaps there were better ways to handle the situation than immediately letting herself take to the air with her eyes a-glow, balls of hot red light forming around her hands, but stealth wasn't exactly Kory's style. The criminals barely had enough time to swear as Kory let loose a wave of starbolts at the exist, stopping them right in their tracks. Her glamour had begun to vanish, almost returning her skin to its natural appearance of shifting, molten light. Had she allowed herself to change anymore, she would have been painful to look at, but she wanted them to look at her now. She wanted them to focus on her and her light, for while they did that, they couldn't focus on what--or who--mastered the shadows she created.

She swooped down to land in front of the entrance, disarming those nearest to her. Steam rose from her hand-prints left in the gun, twisted by her heat and strength, and she used the weapon to knock out those nearest to her. Once that grenade went off and they didn't make their escape quick enough, the battle was all but over. Now that she wasn't holding back--or, well, now that she adjusted herself to a level suitable to these crooks, as she was still holding back--it was all but routine. It did not mean she lost any focus, but it would've been foolish to not understand where this situation ended.

Which meant, as she finished off the last of the thugs on her end, the necessary limited communication between her and Dick was over. Suddenly the fight like less than a skirmish compared to the war zone she was about to enter. Once, long ago, the ground had been a peaceful, almost blissful, place. Now, sometimes she had to stop in her tracks, afraid of stepping on some long-forgotten landmine. Her ears perked at the sound of boots running up stairs, the sirens of police cars coming into focus. Time to go.

With the police coming up both stairways, she looked up to the broken skylights, then to Dick. She floated a couple inches off the floor, her glow returning, along with the red echo that illuminated the path of her light. No, she didn't do subtle, and in Gotham she was all the worse. Unless Dick had a better plan of what to do with her, she would be worse than the Batsignal lighting up the sky, and she knew it.

"Your city, your rules," she said, without the slightest trace of hostility. She never minded taking his lead before, why would she start now?

Dick sometimes forgot how nice it was to work with a team. It was silly how easily that feeling of security was forgotten. In the very beginning he had had it with his parents, trusting them to catch his hands as he jumped through the air far above the ground. Then he'd had it with Batman, never doubting that the knight of Gotham would have his back if he turned it against the wrong enemy. It had been the same with the team, even if things had been a bit more rocky in the beginning as they all learned to work together. Going solo had been far from easy, but he had come to rely on himself.

As he battled with some of the thugs still surrounding him, he could see the glow of Starfire in the distance. He had been cut off from retrieving the hostage himself- but it was alright, because he didn't need to. Kory had it under control. He slammed his baton into the jaw of a thug rushing at him from the side, and cast a glance towards his compatriot. She was a beautiful fighter. Of course, she was beautiful on her own- but in action she had such a powerful grace that the men she was fighting had no choice but to look at her. Even Nightwing let his eyes linger for a moment too long, and had to duck to avoid the swinging fist.

He snapped back into action and dispatched the remainder of the men, though not without first receiving a punch in the nose. He knocked the guy out in return with a kick to the sternum, with perhaps a bit more force than he normally used. The thug hit the ground and skidded along the floor. Dick stood up, wiping the blood from his nose with the back of his glove. Sometimes he questioned why he didn't wear more of a cowl, for protection alone. But then he recalled the times he had worn it himself, and remembered how much he hated the restriction even with modifications. He'd have to rely on his speed... and not get himself distracted.

Dick looked up as Kory approached, her glow hard to miss.

"I forgot how nice it is to work with a partner," he said, voicing his earlier thoughts. "Nice job," he said, before considering what she said. He could hear the sirens and the approaching men- there was no need to stay and tie up the groaning thugs; they'd be taken away without much resistance as it was. They could both go their separate ways now. But standing before her wasn't as awkward as he imagined it might be. It was nice to be in her glow again, like seeing the sun after weeks of winter clouds.

"My city, eh? Well, these days I'm sharing it with... well, I don't even know anymore. A lot of people," he said. Bruce and the new Robin, Red Robin, Batgirl and her new posse of followers, and even Raven. "I rather miss flying," he said, holding his hand out to her and raising his brows. "If you're taking passengers, these days."
