Dear Diary:

I can't believe it! I am so excited! I was brought into the main office today, and can you believe it, I was asked to take on the Joker as a patient?! The Joker! I mean, it's said he may as well be a lost cause. Nobody can get through to him, but they still think that I might be able to do something about him! Okay, so... maybe a little bit of my begging helped me get the position, but hell, like I care? This is the best thing to have ever happened to me!

Up early tomorrow, Diary.
Time for an early night.

Dear Diary:

The Joker is so strange, and... confusing. And devilishly handsome. His pirate grin kinda makes my heart flutter, but it's most certainly unprofessional for a doctor to feel anything for a patient - even compassion. Don't get attached to the patient, and you can't feel sorry for them, and get influenced about how to diagnose them. Yup, I remember all of that! But it's just so difficult to not pay extra attention when he speaks... his broken speech like a lure, and my awe'd expression like a fish after bait. ... Kinda pathetic really, but it would be a lie for me to say he's not absolutely fascinating! I think he's starting to open up to me though - he did hush his voice, and look very suspicious while whispering to me today that he would tell me about his scars when we meet next. I can't wait to hear what he has to say! I'm sitting on pins and needles!

Dear Diary:

He kissed me. The Joker kissed me. He kissed me! And I loved it! He makes my heart flutter and my cheeks blush, and I can't believe that he kissed me! He opened up to me a short while back. Told me how he got his past, and he told me how he got his scars, and the poor thing! He went through such a traumatic time! No wonder the poor darling never had a chance at a good life! No wonder he became the way he did! No wonder he doesn't trust the Arkham staff! That bitch! Well, tomorrow I'm going in, and I'm gonna get a real good story outta him. I promised him that I'd tell him what my life was life, because he shared with me his life.

Oh! I almost forgot! He called me his beautiful angel before I left the room, isn't that sweet!? That man doesn't belong in Arkham! He's done some bad things, sure... but who hasn't?

Doctor Irving Kultz
Gotham City Forensic Psychiatrist
Arkham Asylum Psychiatric Unit
Notes on patient Harleen Quinzel, Age twenty-six

Background Information

Harleen Quinzel was brought to Arkham Asylum disoriented and mumbling incoherently. She was upset, crying and angered. Later, we come to find she had had a fight with her love interest, the Joker, and was simply "heading home to vent" - which in her terms meant breaking into Gotham's Gifts and stealing hundreds of dollars worth of jewelery. "A pick me up" she assures us. Police records and current asylum records show Quinzel used to work as an intern here at Arkham, her dream of becoming a psychiatrist leading her to a morbid obsession with one of our former patients, the Joker. Quinzel used to be his confidant and later on, his assistant in crime.

First Psychiatric Evaluation Session

The patient was comfortable and calm despite the shape in which we had found her last week, and the events that brought her to Arkham under my care. Quinzel understood completely where she was and why, and didn't ask many questions. Quinzel looks like a remarkably intelligent young woman - I have decided to interview her next Friday.
Patient Interview

Harleen, how are you this evening?

Quinzel: Lemme tell ya, Doc. I've been better. I've been a lot better.

I understand you used to work here, Harleen. How does it make you feel to be back here in the patient's point of view?

Quinzel: Honey, the staff here are terrible! I can't believe the pat downs they give ya! The guards... they're pit bulls, Doc! The food stinks, and can't a girl get any damn privacy in this dump? Glass walls for a cell are a stupid idea!

The pat downs are needed, Harleen. You must remember protocol. And if you do so, you should also remember that the cell you are currently residing in is the very same cell your dear Joker was in when you first met him. Isn't that right? [long pause] Harleen?

Quinzel: Yes, Doc! I remember! I remember, alright! I remember that every time I pace that stupid cell! All I can see is his stupid mug, and that stupid perma-smile on his stupid face! Oh, ya. Doc. All I can hear is his stupid laugh and his stupid growly voice... and all I can see are those deep brown eyes, and all I can feel is the fabric of his stupid... suit... - [she trails off]

Harleen. Please, if we may get back on topic here?

Quinzel: Y'know, I loved that big idiot? I loved him, and all he did was shove me away! I did everythin' for that stupid lug, and what does he do to repay me? Yea, he kicks me outta his place and makes me live on the street! The street, that's what! Can you believe him? Leaves me to get caught, and leaves me to rot away in this stupid place. He- [I speak over her]

Harleen, how did you become involved with the Joker to begin with? What brought you to this side of the tracks?

Quinzel: - and he used to do this thing with his tongue, that... What? Involved? Well, I... When I worked here, I was an intern. I was excited to hear that we were gettin' the Joker in as a patient and wanted to take the project on myself. He was bad. Oh, so very bad, Doc! But there was this look to him, y'know? The kinda look a puppy gives you if it gets kicked one too many times. There was a pain behind those beautiful brown eyes that made me wanna learn more, and hear more. One day, he asked me- [I cut her off]

How he got his scars?

Quinzel: Yes! Yes, exactly! And I was so concerned for him. And y'know what? He opened up to me, Doc! He opened up to me, and told me what happened to him! He told me, and I had made the first break through with him, I did! Me!

What did he tell you about his scars, Harleen?

Quinzel: [She gives me a look] Oh, it's on file, Doc. Y'should know it. I'm sure you've read the file.

What did he tell you? I want to hear it coming from you.

Quinzel: [A sigh] The poor thing... he told me about his first psychiatrist. About how she made him a little more than just comfortable and how they got caught one day doing the nasty. [She pauses, as if in thought, a look of utter disgust and anger on her face before she continues] She gets fired, the stupid hussy, then goes insane and cuts his cheeks. The poor man didn't even know how obsessed with him she was. Pathetic really, being so morbidly obsessed like that. [Another pause] Y'see, the strange thing was... I had read he had never been admitted to Arkham before. But I mean, I had opened him up to me, so there must have been some sort of flaw in the files.

It's best you should know that the story is false. Harleen, the Joker tells every person he comes in contact with a different story about how he got his scars.

Quinzel: That's ridiculous! He would never... what did he tell you?

He told me a friend was jealous of how popular he was in school. He told Doctor Mishe that it was his older sister who wanted an incest relationship with him. He told Doctor- [She cuts me off]

Quinzel: Oh, Doc. I know my puddin'! He would never lie to me! I made him better, and he didn't deserve to be in here! He's a brilliant man, and he doesn't deserve to be picked on so much! I broke him outta here, and y'know what? If he came back here, I would break him out again!

Says the girl he kicked out and hasn't gone looking for.

[There is a very long pause, and I almost call it quits as she doesn't speak, nor do anything except lower her head in sadness. Suddenly, however, she lifts her head, and glances towards the window - her expression changes from sadness to a dreamy, love-like state.]

Quinzel: Naw, Doc, you're wrong! My puddin' cares about me. He cares about me a lot, and y'know what... I think he's returnin' me a favor.

Doctor Kultz's Conclusion

Harleen Quinzel has been broken out of Arkham Asylum during our first patient interview. Other than the interview itself and the files of her admittance, I have no other information to conclude.

ME LIKEY! YOU HAVE A GREAT GRASP OF THE CHARACTER'S VOICE WHILE STILL MAKING HER 'YOUR OWN'. I COULD CLEARLY SEE HOW YOU WOULD BE PLAYING HER ON THE SITE. I ALSO LIKED HOW YOU TIED NITZ'S APPLICATION FOR THE JOKER INTO YOUR OWN, IT MADE THEM SEEM MORE COHESIVE AS A SET...AND SINCE HARLEY AND THE JOKER WILL INEVITABLY BE SHIPPING, THAT GOES A LONG WAY TO PUTTING AN APPLICATION OVER THE TOP. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT MISCHIEF YOU GET INTO. :D
