Title: Starting to build units
Description: Suggestions for ways to model them
A7XBatman - September 26, 2011 05:24 PM (GMT)
Hey guys, so im just starting my AL army and im looking for some suggestions. Im looking to make the models the closest to the fluff of AL as possible, and i know in the fluff it says they all try to look the same.
Ive been looking online at GW and its cheaper to buy the 3 chaos marine box then buying 10 of them! But im guessing thats cuz the 3 man box was WAY less bits to choose from, but this would play into the whole looking the same thing. Maybe just ask my buddies for extra chaos bits or something.
I plan on ordering through the warstore if they have the 3 man boxes, IF i even decide on going with that route of building my troops.
SO... any suggestions from you guys? Past experiences on purchasing, opinions on the best way to go, anything helps!
Thanks, much appreciated,

i think the best place to start is buy a few box's of chaos marines and mix in a few space marine bits too. as the space marines bits tend to look similar and fit quite well with the AL style : mark :

I'm not sure but i think the 3 man box is snap fit and so would be very bland. Not that interesting. Think chaos black reach marines.
If you want to take that approach i would say mix in a few marine parts.

Although you might get your models cheaper, getting the small boxes is going to rob you of choices when it comes to special weapons, champion options and icons; all essential for CSM squads.
Getting spare chaos parts from other chaos players may give a good selection of ccw/bp arms to go with bolters (depending if those three models are snap fit as Eetion said), but special weapons certainly tend to be like gold dust, and if you can get some of those from your friends, you have very generous friends :D
Personally, I freely mix chaos and imperial parts on my models, representing the scavenging/resupplying aspect of the AL, but still with the majority of chaos parts.

SNAP TOGETHER!?!?!? NOT IN MY ARMY! Wow i had no idea the 3 man boxes were like the snap on marine sets. Forget those!
I do like the idea of mixing in marine bits with chaos bits though, that would make it a pretty good not to chaosy mix, which is what im kind of looking for neways. The legion that split off not exactly to worship chaos, but just cuz they were like,
"Hey, we dont like you guys nemore, we are gonna go do our own thing!"

if you are going to mix and match with loyalist marine parts i suggest using dark angel parts as the cloaked figures add to the secretive feel of the army.

It might be a good idea to try to get some running legs in there as well from one of the assault kits. I used some death company and dark angel legs with mine which work fairly well with replaced icons and you get some nice helmets on the sprues. It just helps break up the monotony of everyone having their legs braced. Otherwise I've got a mix of dark angels, regular marines, Iron Hands parts and chaos space marines in my lot. Spare marine parts are useful for bikers as well if you're going to take them.

Or zerker legs would do. If you have a battle force and want something to do with them.
But e bay can be your friend.
